MP praises inspiring funding
Colchester’s MP has thanked two of The Jumbo Project’s major funders as work gets underway to save the landmark building.
Representatives of Historic England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund have visited the disused Victorian water tower. Their tour of the building with Pam Cox MP coincided with the start of preliminary investigations in preparation for the construction work next year.
Pam Cox MP said:
“The investment in Jumbo from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England, together with UK Government Funding and support from Colchester City Council, is inspiring. Jumbo is at the heart of a host of exciting transformation projects underway in our beloved city centre.
“It was wonderful to climb to the top of this remarkable Grade ll* Listed building and discuss the plans with experts from Historic England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and North Essex Heritage. The city is so grateful for their support.”

Luke Wormald, East of England Head of Region for Historic England, which has given several rounds of grant funding, including £550,000 this year, said:
“We are pleased to be part of this amazing partnership working to deliver a renewed purpose for the Jumbo water tower. Working in collaboration with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Colchester City Council and North Essex Heritage, we’ve contributed funding, advice and technical expertise to help rejuvenate this amazing local landmark. The project is a chance to see heritage being renewed for local people and visitors alike, which is what it is all about.”
Rachel Macfarlane, Senior Engagement Manager for The National Lottery Heritage Fund which awarded £8m funding in January, said:
“We’re proud that our funding will give a new purpose to this iconic part of Colchester’s skyline, harnessing heritage to help boost the local economy and people’s pride in the city. As the largest funder for the UK’s heritage, our vision is for heritage like Jumbo to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future.”
