Could you help our charity?
Will 2026 be the year you use your expertise to help shape the future of special buildings in North Essex? We hope so! We are looking for Volunteer Special Advisers to join the North Essex Heritage team.
North Essex Heritage (NEH) is recruiting one or more Volunteer Special Advisers to help our charity with some brilliant, challenging, and unique projects. Our purpose is to preserve buildings of particular beauty or historical architectural or constructional interest in Colchester and North Essex.
If you want to use your experience to help preserve and/or repurpose the historic buildings of Colchester and North Essex for the benefit of the community, we would love to meet you.
We are looking for volunteers with skills in:
- documenting building works and people’s stories
- archival research
- developing and growing meaningful engagement with local and diverse communities
- heritage interpretation
- establishing and managing successful learning programmes
- establishing and operating a cultural arts/heritage venue
As a building preservation Trust, we believe buildings are so much more than wood, bricks and mortar. They are often a source of pride and identity to their local communities. If sensitively conserved, restored and repurposed, they can bring a host of social, economic and cultural benefits. That’s why our small charity is committed to community-led preservation and regeneration of buildings across North East Essex.
Our biggest project is our exciting mission to breathe new life into the historic Jumbo water tower, transforming it from a “Heritage at Risk” site into a vibrant community asset. With substantial financial support from UK Government funding, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England and other funders, and a 150-year lease agreement in place, NEH is poised to reimagine Jumbo as a dynamic heritage destination that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.
